J Tean Kitchen (佳田小廚) @ SS2 Mall, Petaling Jaya.

I must admit that I’m an avid burger lover and have tried various types of burgers but BKT burger is certainly something I’ve never tasted or even heard of before. Since today is my birthday which is also a public holiday, we planned a trip to SS2 mall to savour this unique burger. I was told that one may even enjoy a bowl of BKT in style at this restaurant by the name of J Tean Kitchen owned by James Tean or Master Tean, the maestro behind the highly successful Tean’s gourmet packet pastes, especially the BKT spices which made its way to countries like Australia, US, Europe and Asia.

The interior of this place is well designed and spaced out. Oriental furniture with a twist filled the outlet. An alfresco dining area with opium beds and Chinese stools with flowery paintings are available if you don’t mind the heat. Good for chilling out in the evenings though. I felt the tables are a little too high thus made it a little uncomfortable for children. Also, the clearance from the chair to the base of the table is very tight making it impossible to cross your legs!  It may look good but not very practical and comfortable. We should have opted for the drum table with stools instead.

J Pork Burger @ (招牌特制汉堡包) RM 7.90 ~ Patty was juicy but I could hardly taste the BKT flavor. Bun got rather soggy after absorbing the mayonnaise that it started to fall apart as I was gobbling down the burger.  A petite size just nice for a snack or a dainty eater.

Braised Pork with Buns (红烧猪肉馒头) @ RM 7.90 ~ Braised pork mixed with special thick gravy sauce sandwiched in mantou. Meat was juicy and tasty. Good appetizer!

J-Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶-套餐一) @ RM 20.90 ~ Using the traditional Klang BKT recipe, this bowl of meat was nicely stewed to perfection. Served generously with thickly cut pork belly, 3 fairly decent size lean ribs, pig stomach, large Chinese mushrooms was good for 2 person. Soup was great. Not too thick or watery. Just nice and very herbal-istic! Lovely!

Fried Crullers (油条) @ RM 2.00 ~ A BKT meal is not complete without this bowl of freshly deep-fried crunchy yao tiao!

Lion Head (狮子头) @ RM 7.90 ~ This Shanghainese signature dish was prepared using fats, lean meat and chopped carrots mixed together deep-fried and braised. The meatballs were juicy with really good mouthfeel. The accompanying pickles went well with the meatballs! Worth trying!

J-Pumpkin Soup (招牌特制南瓜汤) @ RM 4.90 ~ Wrapped nicely with puffy pastry, the soup was sweet with good texture, smooth and creamy. Thinly sliced Chinese and button mushrooms buried in the soup. Too rich for my liking. It’s like drinking spoonfuls of butter! Gave up after a few scoops! Burp!

Chinese tea (普洱) @ RM 1.50/pax ~ Tea leaves were of decent quality and the mechanism of the teapot was interesting. Catered for loose tea leaves, it separates the leaves from the hot water. Press the little knob on the cover and it releases the tea into the pot.

This enjoyable and simple birthday lunch cost only RM 58.80 inclusive of a 5% service charge (RM 2.80) which I consider very reasonable. I would definitely come back to savor other interesting dishes like the J soup, J knuckle, porky bun, porky pie, bbq ribs which are the famous items here. Till then… very much thank you wifey for lunch and Happy Divali!
