Gee Seng Seafood Restaurant (義成海鮮樓) @ Bukit Tambun, Penang

After spending a night in Taiping, we continued our journey to Penang and made a stop at Tambun for dinner. We wanted to try the famous Cia Xiang Seafood Restaurant (家乡海鲜楼) clay pot crab rice but they were not open for business as yet. Our tummies just can’t wait for another 45 minutes!  Instead, we proceeded to Restoran Gee Seng, the usual seafood restaurant whenever we visit Penang.

Gee Seng Seafood Restaurant (義成海鮮樓) ~ The last in a row of seafood restaurants, next to the jetty.

Horseshoe Crab  ~ One of the oldest creatures in the world. It existed even before the dinosaurs!! Horseshoe crabs can be prepared in many methods and the only edible part are the eggs or roe. One of the methods GS served are salt baked with kerabu mango @ RM 10.00 per crab. Tried once out of curiosity but definitely won’t order this dish again.

Crabs, mantis shrimps & rock oysters (螃蟹, 瀨尿蝦, 生蚝)~ Order it in any style and the chefs are ever ready to cook them for you!

Fresh silver pomfret, balitong, raw scallops, squids, clams, & paddy field chicken all lining up on this big stainless steel table for customers to pick and choose.

Fried oyster (蠔煎) @ RM 9.00 ~ This Teochew/Fujian origin dish is very popular in Malaysia and especially in Penang. Prepared using omelette, oysters, tapioca flour and fried heavily with pork lard, but here at GS, pork lard is omitted as this place is HALAL. This is a very good “eat for fun” dish. The omelette is slightly overcooked but the oysters are heavenly!

Salted Egg Crab (咸蛋蟹) @ RM 29.00 ~ Nicely cooked and tasted pretty good especially with the presence of salted egg yolk and curry leaves!

Stir-fry Chinese cabbage (清炒菜胆) @ RM 6.00 ~ We thought they send us the wrong dish upon looking at it. It came shredded and not a norm in most restaurants in Kuala Lumpur.

Steamed Grouper in soy sauce (酱油蒸石斑鱼) @ RM 46.00 ~ Fish is fresh but slightly overcooked. Could have been better!

Beancurd with minced meat (肉碎豆腐) @ RM 6.00 ~ This beancurd with minced meat really came with a lots of additional stuffs like button mushrooms, beans, carrot slices, prawns and celery!! Penang style maybe? Price is very reasonable and tasted fine but I would prefer a simpler version, minus the celery of course!

Seafood cracker à la Penang style. Play drum anyone?

Behind the scene ~

Totaled at RM 104.20 with all the above dishes mentioned plus rice and a pot of chinese jasmine tea. Overall, we all felt that the standard kinda dropped at GS, but nevertheless, we had a great meal at a very reasonable price and there’s no match from seafood restaurants in KL, so, no complaints!
