7even Recipe Restaurant (七味馆私房小菜) @ Bandar Puteri Puchong

We visit MIL who resides in Bandar Puteri Puchong almost every weekend and I’m sure it won’t be long before we’d have tried out most, if not all the eateries there! This time we decided to try this restaurant with an interesting name – 7even Recipes. If you are curious to what this seven recipes is all about, it actually refers to the sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, golden, salty (甜,酸,苦,辣,金,咸) taste and last but not least, the benovolent taste (仁情味), that’s according to the lady who took our order. Sound interesting eh?

There are 2 sides in Bandar Puteri Puchong which  house plenty of restaurants. I always referred to them as the Giant Hypermart side and the one across it. 7even recipe is on Giant’s. Looking for a parking spot can be a hassle during lunch/dinner hours but I was lucky to find one without much trouble. I was early!

7even Recipe used to be a Japanese restaurant that has ceased operation, hence the recycled Tatami style seating and furniture are still in use. Large prints of their signature dishes adorn the wall within and they all look yummy!

We chose the a/c section as I found having Chinese food on Tatamis a little weird. On top of that, the weather was pretty warm too. As there were 5 of us, we settled for the round table that came with a turn plate which I felt was a total nuisance! It’s so bloody smooth it turned the minute you lay your finger on it! Imagine that!

7even Recipe home boiled watercress soup (七味滚西洋菜汤) ~ Very sweet and the aroma of the watercress is distinctive. Nice and on the house!

7even Recipe homemade braised pork belly with peanuts (七味特别自制花生扣肉) @ RM 16.00 ~ We were told that this is only available on weekends and I ordered it without hesitation. I was lucky it tasted good. The lean meat was tender with good mouthfeel and the layer of fats wasn’t too thick. The peanuts was soft in texture as it immersed in the aromatic gravy!

7even Recipe signature golden bean curd (七味招牌香金砖) @ RM 10.00 ~ Salted fish, diced mushrooms and minced meat with sprinkled scallions on the top of this deep-fried soya base bean curd remained smooth on the inside while the outer skin was crispy. Serving was little small though but no complaints with that price.

7even Recipe signature stir-fry Chinese cabbage (七味招牌香港启兰苗) @ RM 10.00 ~ Stir-fried using yellow wine (黄酒) and a few big slices of ginger. An acceptable concoction and blended well with the vege but the stems are a little too “hard” for the ladies. They didn’t like the texture and left more that half a plate for me to finish.

7even Recipe Steamed Taipan Fish with Douchi (七味豆豉蒸大班鱼) @ 31.00 (RM4/100g) ~ The Taipans (大班鱼) are slowly finding its way onto our tables, taking over their peer, the Tilapias (非洲鱼). Its texture is smoother than the Tilapia and the mud smell is minimal too. They are almost identical in their looks! Here in 7R, a generous amount of chopped garlic and douchi/black fermented beans (豆豉) makes a great combo with the fish. The sauce was just as good! The fish weighed 700g with RM 3.oo for the douchi.

All in @ RM 75.80 inclusive of 4 plain rice (RM 4.80) and a pot of Chinese tea (香片) for 4 pax (RM4.00). Reasonable and worth coming back as they have quite a lot to offer. If you are looking for healthy dining, this is the place for you coz their motto suggests Less OIL, Less SALT, Less SUGAR and NO MSG! (少油, 少盐, 少糖, 无味精) An extensive À la Carte menu is available for the lone diners!
