Today, we attended a charity lunch at Golden Sun Seafood Restaurant organized by Persatuan Pengajian Tai Ji Quan W.P. & Selangor in conjunction with its 11th anniversary and Xmas lunch which included karaoke and dancing performances! We supported by purchasing a table at RM 400 but was a little reluctant to attend due to the nature of the lunch but was left with little choice as the organizing chairman personally extended the invitation. I went with a heavy heart, warning wifey and the rest of the gang to anticipate watching old folks dancing and singing away before our eyes throughout lunch which was certainly going to give me the shudders!
Golden fragrance bean curd (金香豆腐) @ RM 25.00 ~ After several speeches, this plate of bean curd arrived. This was surprisingly good despite the presentation. They were smooth and the mixed minced meat with the curry leaves certainly blended in well, thus producing an aromatic and flavorful gravy.
Claypot curry fish (瓦煲咖喱鱼片) @ RM 50.00 ~ Curry was tasty and laden with generous amount of eggplant, stuffed bean curd and okra. However, the sliced fish wasn’t appetizing. Redline snakehead (Toman) was used and was overly cooked resulting in a flaky texture, otherwise this dish would have been terrific!
Braised vegetable with mushrooms (三菇豆筋菜) @ RM 25.00 ~ Finely braised black Chinese mushroom (冬菇), wheat gluten (豆筋), mustard green (介菜), halved button mushroom (蘑菇) and sliced abalone mushroom (灵菇) made an interesting combination. The gravy was so silky and full of flavor. Splendid!
Stewed pork knuckle (红烧猪手) @ RM 38.80 ~ This was the very first time I’ve had pork knuckle in small pieces form as they’re normally served in bigger chunks. The combo of lean and fats gave the meat a succulent texture with good mouthfeel. There’s only one word to describe this dish, awesome! Must try!
Fried sea prawns in superior soy sauce (鼓油皇明虾) @ RM 70.00/500g ~ Prawns (明虾) shrunk in size after deep-fried making it rather small, way overcooked, tasted bland and certainly does not suggest any superior soy sauce flavor. A little pricey too!
Steamed chicken with superior soy sauce (肉兰肥鸡/半只) @ RM 30.00/½ bird ~ This was nicely done. Meat was tender, smooth and juicy and the cleverly prepared sauce perfected it. The sprinkle of fried garlic and dash of oil complemented the accompanying Chinese broccolli/kai-lan.
Crispy roasted duck Hong Kong style (港式脆皮烧鸭/半只) @ RM 30.00/½ bird ~ Again, this was great. Meat was succulent and tender enough. The aromatic crispy skin was such a delight to chew on. Simply brilliant!
Since this was also a party to celebrate the birthdays of those in the month of October-December, a three-tier cake was prepared. Here’s a part of it. Fluffy and not overly sweet, even with the cream. Quite good given the fact that I’m not a cake lover but E enjoyed it the most!
I must say that most of the food I’ve tasted today was commendable except for maybe one or two dishes which was below par. I might drop by again as I noticed that they are having some pretty good promotions. Overall, an enjoyable lunch entertained by “matured” dancers and “quirky” singers!
