Assam laksa is one of the favorites in the staple of good food in Penang and is easily available at almost every corner on the island. One wouldn’t mind traveling a little further just to savor a good bowl of this sourish, tangy, spicy and pungent bowl of classic. Today Lily brought us to this place in Perak Road which is also a favorite amongst the locals.
The place was empty as it just opened for business. A seat inside the restaurant is definitely a better bet as it so darn hot at the patio.
This place offers something additional over other AL stalls and that’s the extra-large fish ball @ 0.30 each. Fish balls? Never tried before with AL.
Penang Assam Laksa (槟城亚参叻沙) @ RM 2.40/RM2.70 (s/l) ~ The amount of fish meat is so noticeable and generous. Instead of having all the fish meat crushed, here they served in big chunks, fresh. The fish broth is clear, not as thick as others but sourish and flavorful enough. The lei fun (酹粉) is nicely cooked and springy. Mint leaves and sliced onions are aplenty. For extra kick I added additional bird’s-eye chillies and since I don’t favor the overly fishy taste, I omitted the shrimp paste.
The AL was pleasing and would like to thank Lily for bringing us to this place. Maybe I should try the “extra-large” fish balls in my next visit since this place is famous partly because of that.
