Kam Kee Seafood Restaurant is nestled within the neighborhood off Jalan Gasing and a popular eatery amongst the locals and even the Malaysian Chinese politicians, one of them being MCA President Mr. Chua Soi Lek.
After several invitations from Cat, I finally relented and agreed to check out this place with her. Apparently, the food here is good and reasonably priced. Well, let’s see……
The Four Heavenly Kings (四大天王) @ RM 20.00 ~ This was first to arrive with the ensemble of longbeans, ocras, 4 angled beans and brinjals. A tanginess of shrimp paste with the cleverly adjusted level of spiciness makes it so “heavenly”!! A 10/10!
Marmite Pork Ribs (妈蜜排骨) @ RM 35.00 ~ The distinctive aroma of Marmite filled the air way before this plate of ribs reached our table. I was salivating! To my disappointment, the meat was not tender nor juicy and with the taste of bitterness from the overly burnt gravy spoiled it! A 2/10!
Signature Fish Paste with Beancurd (招牌魚漿豆腐) @ RM 22.00 ~ The gravy is as smooth as the texture of the beancurds and with the ‘bouncy’ and good mouthfeel fish paste just perfected it! Recommended! A 10/10!
Steamed Tilapia Teochew Style @ (潮州蒸金鳳) RM 28.00 ~ I heard that the way they prepare the Teochew style here is different from others. True enough, the gravy was not the clear ones we’d normally had but the way it was prepared deserves a thumbs up! On the contrary, the Tilapia (金鳳/非洲魚) was filled with mud smell and killed this lovely dish completely! Pity! We told the captain and he politely omitted this from the bill. He was very apologetic too. Now this is service!! A 2/10!
Stir-fry Haruan (snakehead) with Ginger & Scallions (姜蔥炒生魚片) @ RM 40.00 ~ The replacement fish for the Tilapia and I must say that this is very good! I can still taste the sweetness from the haruan slices even with the generous amount of scallions and ginger. The wonderful gravy perfected it! Must order! A 10/10!
Clams in Superior Broth (上汤啦啦) @ RM 12.00 ~ This was the last to come and joins the list of disappointment, like the Tilapia. Meat were rubbery and smelt fishy! The supposedly “superior broth” turn out bland with just the taste of ginger and pepper! Boy I missed the clams in Batu Maung! Cat wanted to reject this too but we talked her out of it. Afterall, I’m no MCA President!!
Totaled @ RM 162.00 inclusive of 10 plain white rice (RM 10.00) and a pot of Liu Bao Chinese tea. I wouldn’t say that the food here is heavenly and super reasonable. I would rate it as “acceptable”. If I were to swing by for dinner again, I would definitely give seafood a miss, except for the haruan of course!
